As a little girl I meticulously studied my verses to memorize for Sunday school each week. It was the gold stars that motivated me. I loved placing a new sticky star on the poster board chart my teacher had made. But the best part was seeing all those gold stars lined up at the end of each quarter and receiving my prize. Of course in the early 80s prizes for children were definitely not as extravagant as they are today. I’m pretty sure I was satisfied with a sheet of “Jesus Loves Me” stickers.
At some point the gold stars stopped and the focus on memorizing Scripture as part of growing spiritually faded. But just because we don’t do it, doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable. Verses like Psalm 119:11 point to the importance—
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
What if we made 2017 the year we get back into the habit of memorizing God’s Word?
