Happy New Year Sweet Tea friends! Do you catch the organizing bug every January like I do? I have come to the conclusion that this obsessive organizing disorder spreads to epidemic proportions during the first month of the year because we all crave some calm and quiet after the craziness of Christmas. Or maybe that’s just my problem… 😉 No matter how I caught it, I’ve got the organizing fever, and I’m dreaming of ways to incorporate storage options in my farmhouse style decor.
Farmhouse Style Decor: Rustic Painted Crate
I bought this old crate for $5 at an online auction. I was clearly well used, and a little dirty. Someone had used one side as a spray paint “studio”, so the original finish wasn’t going to work for me.
After a thorough cleaning with some all purpose spray, I decided to add a VERY rustic coat of white paint, using a stencil brush. A regular paint brush is meant to lay down a smooth coat of paint, but the stiff bristles of a stencil brush are perfect for a rustic look. I poured a small amount of paint in the cap, and refilled it as I went.
To create this rustic finish, lightly dab the brush in the paint and add color in a purposely haphazard way.
After painting, I decided some old metal typography was in order. (are those your 3 FAVORITE WORDS too?)
Now have some stylish storage in which to stash our stuff, perfect for my favorite rustic farmhouse style decor.
Old wooden crates and leftover paint for the win!
Are you organizing this January too? What spot in your house needs the most help? Our basement would win anyone’s “messiest room” contest, so we’re starting there.
