Hey y’all! Today I’m doing something out of the ordinary, and very special. I’d like to welcome my mom to the blog today to share a story and show you How to Make A Difference with Help4Haiti.org.
Y’all, meet my mom. She’s the strongest woman I know, truly. She is the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman. She is selfless, has a heart of gold, and is the best mom & grandmother I could ever hope for. Not to mention, she laughs at my lame jokes, and she’s only 5′ tall so she’s extra stinkin’ cute. 🙂 I love her to pieces, and I know you will, too. Take it away, momma!
I’ve always had a heart for children, especially those who need that little extra love and support. I guess I get it from my parents. I grew up with so many foster brothers and sisters, I lost count.
In April of this year, I got the opportunity to go to Haiti with Help4Haiti.org founded by Louis and Nancy Chalmers. It is one of the mission fields supported by my church, Wildwood Baptist Church near my home in Georgia. I have sponsored a boy in Haiti for about 8 years and only knew what I could learn from the letters I occasionally receive. So, I decided this was the perfect chance to go and learn about Haiti for myself.
If you aren’t aware, Haiti suffered a massive earthquake in 2010. More than 160,000 people were killed and over 1.5 million were displaced. Thousands of children were left homeless and without families, or with families who could no longer care for them. The country has still not recovered for many reasons, but poverty is one. Many children are still homeless and many are born every day without anyone who cares for them or can support them.
In order to help some of these children, Help4Haiti.org partnered with a local pastor in Port au Prince. Pastor Olistin has a heart for these children and currently cares for about 150 who have been placed in various homes and other temporary housing. He had a vision to build a permanent home for them and with the assistance of Help4Haiti.org and the support of Wildwood Baptist and others, it is finally becoming a reality.
Pastor Olistin obtained a piece of property outside of Port au Prince and started a new town called Onaville. As funds were raised, the orphanage has begun to take shape.
With the approximately $45,000 raised since April, the first floor of the orphanage is nearing completion and we are hoping to move the first 70-75 children into their new home in mid-September. Now we need to raise funds to purchase beds, table & chairs and kitchen appliances. We have enough so far to buy about 15 bunk beds at $500 each, but we need several more plus the other furniture. We also need to buy sheets, pillows, towels and other daily essentials. And in order to feed these children, we need sponsors. So far, only about 35 of the 150 children are sponsored.
How can you help? First, pray for these children and the work of Help4Haiti.org. Secondly, consider sponsoring a child for $35 each month or giving a one-time gift to help us complete this project. Future plans include a second floor for the rest of the kids, a school, a medical clinic and a church.
My trip to Haiti was life-changing I fell in love with these wonderful warm and loving kids. And of course, one in particular captured my heart. His name is Daniel and he was just about 9 months old in April. Pastor Olistin found him on the side of the road alone when he was only about 3 months old. He was either not wanted or his parents knew they could not care for him, but now he has a home and someone to love him. I now sponsor Daniel and I am returning in September to see him and to hopefully help move the children into their new home.
I have some of the most wonderful readers on the planet, so I’m issuing a challenge! I’ve set up a GoFundMe page for this fundraiser. I would love to blow the roof off this thing and raise a minimum of $5000 to help buy beds for these kids. Can we do it? YES WE CAN!
