My friends, I have an embarrassing secret to share. I have had a empty stairwell wall for years, and its nakedness has driven me CRAZY(er). This week, with the help of my sweet engineer hubby, I styled a fun outfit for our wall, and we have some photo wall tips to share with you!
Photo Wall Tips
I think a stairwell wall is a great place to display family photos, but I also like to mix in some other pieces to add texture. I prefer photo frames to be all one color, so other elements are also perfect for adding a contrasting hue. We started by shopping our house for a few items, choosing an odd number because all of the “pros” say to decorate in odd number groups.
Engineers are skilled at symmetry, so I let my hubby arrange them. Yep, I gave up control, and it was HARD.
He even gathered and photographed his own tools.
He’s also in charge of sweeping the floors and keeping the hammer from the dogs, so…there’s that. Apparently the beer bottle was used to keep the paper from rolling. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.
The next step was to roll out the paper and trace each item.
He then made little notes on the paper, using our kids initials to make sure he had the correct photo, and markings to note the location of the picture hangers on each piece.
The shapes were cut out and taped to the wall to ensure placement was correct before the hammer and nails came out. (I would have just started hammering, but that’s why I’m not allowed to hang things on the wall myself anymore.) Try folding the paper accordian style so that it will hang without curling.
The project was well “supervised” as you can tell. 😉
Next hammer the nails through the paper at the spots marked, and hang up your stuff!
One more tip: if you’re like me and love to change things up, try hanging a couple of empty frames and just use some washi tape to add printable art inside. These can easily be switched up for seasons and holidays.
Our naked wall has an entirely new look, and it makes me so happy! I hope you are inspired to try your own easy gallery wall with these photo wall tips.
