If you missed Phase 1: Demo, CLICK HERE to get caught up, then come back here to read the latest on the kitchen remodel (AKA war zone) that is going on in my house.
We’re progressing right along with our kitchen remodel, and I’m so happy with the way things are going. We’ve survived the demo, and new drywall has been put up, along with a few new cabinets, so I can start to see how this thing will look when it’s all put together.
Where did I leave off last time? Oh yea – a disaster area. Demo had pretty much been completed and we were waiting on the drywall guy.
Good news – he showed up and spent about 10 hours patching and hanging drywall, then came back the next day to sand it all down. It’s like buttah.
The contractor has been working on putting all the pieces back together this week, so let me give you the latest.
The sink and the cabinet it was sitting in got moved. See that weird angle in the hardwood floor? That’s the weird angle the cabinet was in. Ugh.
Then my contractor had to cut a hole in the floor to move the plumbing. It smelled lovely…{bleh!}. The glue he was using had a sweet chemically smell and it was awful! When I came to see the source of the smell, I asked, “What is THAT?!”
His reply? “Progress. It’s the smell of progress.” << and that’s why I love my contractor.
After he moved the plumbing, he brought me a couple new cabinets – one for each side of the sink. While he was doing that, the hubs & I took a little trip to the granite shop.
Look at all that granite, ripe for the picking. I ended up choosing Kashmir White.
There’s a close-up. Pretty, right? I can’t wait to see it installed!
So, when we came home from the granite place, the contractor was finished for the day. As I sat in the living room staring into the kitchen, I couldn’t help but think how short the new set of cabinets seemed. I grabbed three dining chairs and placed them end to end, where the future peninsula will be. It was tight.
So, I called my contractor and told him we needed to go bigger.
I got an extra foot of cabinet & counter space. WOOT! I had him remove the skinny cabinet he originally put in, and add a 24″ cabinet in it’s place. I’m glad I made that change.
Look at it! So much space now! I like that I have big drawers on one side of the sink (that has yet to be installed) and a cabinet door on the other.
Oh, we have a pantry now, too – sort of. We have pantry walls and trim. It is smaller than the previous pantry, but I think it’ll still be plenty of room for our food. And now that I have extra cabinet space, I might use some of that for the lesser-used pantry items. We’ll see how that plays out.
I’ll show you my sink later. That was a saga, let me tell you…
THE SINK SAGA
Hubs & I went to Home Depot to find a sink. I wanted white granite, one bowl. You canNOT find a white sink in stores. Period. They’re like unicorns or something.
Instead we bought a Christmas tree. << Don’t judge me.
Next we went to Lowe’s. Same thing. No white undermount sinks in the store. So, I sat on the floor in the sink aisle at Lowe’s, found one online, and bought it. Done.
Not quite. Two days later, I get an email saying that particular sink was on backorder and they’d let me know when they had it to ship. Hello?! I can’t get my granite templated and cut until I have a sink! Cancelled that order.
Finally, I found my amazing hubby found another white undermount single-bowl granite sink. We ordered it. It arrived Wednesday. Momma is happy.
So, what do you think so far? There’s still a lot to be done, but I’ll definitely keep you posted!
