One year ago this week, on November 3, 2021, my business partner Kelly and I signed the lease on a building that would become Lake & Local, a retail store and small event venue. We had no idea what we were doing, how much work would be involved, or just how much joy we'd get from this adventure, but it's pretty cool to look back on the past year and see how much we've accomplished.
A Vision & A Dream
Downtown Greensboro, Georgia, is incredibly charming, rich in history and steeped in stories. The building that houses our shop and venue at 104 S. Main Street is no different.
Formerly an antique store for 21 years prior, our building came with some history. We learned that it used to be the Statham Hotel, predating the Civil War and serving as a makeshift hospital during the war. It has been many things since, including a hardware store and a restaurant before becoming an antique store.
In addition to the building, we also got a palm garden that was planted in 1996 after the roof fell in and the owners didn’t want to replace it.
When we took over the building, the garden was in terrible shape. The antique store owners neglected it for years. It was overgrown, palms had not been cleaned in ages, and the concrete was almost solid black. There were broken bits of pottery and other miscellaneous junk all over the place.
Needless to say, this was where we put our immediate focus and attention.
While doing our cleanup and build-out, we kept the doors open and encouraged our community to be nosey. It worked really well, as word spread of this new shop and event venue that was coming to town.
On the night of the Christmas tree lighting in downtown Greensboro, we held an Open House and invited the community to stop by. We served refreshments and had some inventory available, with the understanding that we weren’t truly up and running yet.
It was a huge success! We had a great turnout and people were so encouraging and excited.
We held a soft opening for a couple of weeks leading up to Christmas and had great sales, despite having very little inventory to start with.
Lake & Local in downtown Greensboro, Georgia, officially opened for business on January 4, 2022. We held a ribbon cutting with the Greene County Chamber of Commerce later that month with a huge crowd of friends, family, and other members of the community.
Events at Lake & Local
We kicked it into high gear after that and it’s truly been nonstop.
We’ve held 26 events in our shop so far this year including candle-making, charcuterie classes, ladies night out events, fondue night, bingo night, and so much more.
In addition, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting 21 private events, everything from rehearsal dinners and birthday parties to bridal showers and corporate meetings.
Shop at Lake & Local
Our retail shop carries products that are sourced from Southern small businesses, as well as products made in-house by myself and Kelly.
We carry tees and sweatshirts, some with designs representative of our local area like “Lake Oconee” and “Greensboro”. We also carry barware, local honey, Georgia wine, and a lot more.
Over the course of our first year in business, we’ve been able to fine-tune our products as we’ve seen what sells well and what doesn’t.
Our best sellers are by far our purses, local honey, wine, and t-shirts.
It’s also been really fun decorating our front windows for each season. We’re decorated for fall with a campfire scene in one window and a football field in the other.
We’re about to flip the shop for Christmas, and I can’t wait! We’ve got big plans for the shop, with new window designs and lots of new inventory!
The Gathering Garden
I’ve got to put a spotlight on the hidden gem in downtown Greensboro. We’re fortunate enough to have this beautiful and unique palm garden as part of our property. It’s gated on both sides, and lighted with fairy lights on trees and strung over the patio. Honestly, it’s stunning.
Isn’t she a beauty? We think it’s quite dreamy. Let me share a few more photos, just because I can.
It’s been a dream come true owning and operating Lake & Local at 104 S. Main Street in downtown Greensboro, Georgia. We have big plans for the future and look forward to many more years in business!
